Relax Steelers Nation It’s Just Preseason

The Pittsburgh Steelers capped off their 2024 preseason Saturday by losing to the Detroit Lions , 24-17, which means they finished the preseason 0 and 3, which thankfully means absolutely nothing. Let’s not forget, the Steelers went 3-0 during preseason last year with Trubisky, Rudolph, and Pickett, and we see how that year turned out. And the Steelers still made the playoffs, which is a testament to Mike Tomlin. So, let’s take a step back, breathe, and not the panic button just yet.

Understanding the Purpose of Preseason

Before diving into some key takeaways from yesterday’s game, let’s discuss the purpose of preseason football. Unlike the regular season, where wins and losses matter, preseason is primarily about evaluation. Coaches are looking at rosters, assessing talent, and determining who will make the final cut. Rookies and veterans alike are trying to find their rhythm, build chemistry, and showcase their skills.

Preseason gives teams a chance to experiment with strategies and rotations without the pressure of a must-win scenario. It’s a time for players to shake off the rust and for coaches to test different combinations. Understanding this context can help ease the anxiety that comes with the inevitable ups and downs of these exhibition games.

The Importance of Player Development

One of the most critical aspects of preseason is player development. This is especially true for rookies and younger players who are trying to make a name for themselves. It’s essential for fans to focus on individual performances rather than the overall score. Each rookie brings unique skills to the table, and preseason is their opportunity to shine. For example, Payton Wilson demonstrated great poise under pressure, making smart decisions that could bode well for the regular season. The confidence they build during these games can translate into significant contributions when the games count. Veterans also play a crucial role during preseason. Their experience is invaluable, both on and off the field. Watching how they mentor younger players can be just as important as their performance.

Here’s a look at some key takeaways from preseason Week 3.

Russell Wilson
Wilson desperately needed a strong showing in the preseason finale, not for Mike Tomlin and the Steelers coaching staff, but to keep the media mob off him for a few weeks. While it was a short showing, Wilson completed both of his passes for 26 yards, including a nice throw to George Pickens to set the Steelers up for an eventual touchdown. Mike Tomlin definitely saw enough and pulled Wilson immediately, which, to me solidified that Wilson will be the day one starter. There was never really much doubt outside of the media, anyway.

QB Justin Fields
Fields didn’t show anything over the 3 preseason games that showed he’s ready to take the starting job from Russell Wilson, which was given to him by Mike Tomlin. And if you’re questioning Wilson’s talent, in 2023 during his horrid last season with the Broncos, he still managed 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns to 8 interceptions. In my opinion, Justin Fields still looks like a young Cam Newton, who would really rather run the ball than throw it. He also still needs to learn to protect the ball. Can he eventually be a good pocket passer, It’s possible. Dak Prescott has really evolved his game since coming out of Mississippi State, but like Dak, Fields will have to get the right people around him.

Beanie Bishop
Bishop once looked like he was going to be the starting slot cornerback, but a poor showing in Week 1 of the preseason followed by an injury halted his momentum. Not only did Bishop fail to stand out, he didn’t start — Thomas Graham started and played late into the game, which is not a good sign.
After the game, head coach Mike Tomlin revealed that Bishop didn’t play with the starters because of all the time he missed.
Graham had some good moments. While he appears to be the top slot option going into Week 1, Beanie Bishop could rally back

Cordarrelle Patterson
Patterson showed he still has some juice after he broke loose for a 31-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The veteran will likely slot in as the No. 3 running back and will have a role in the return game.

Dez Fitzpatrick
It remains to be seen if Fitzpatrick did enough to earn a roster spot, but had the longest play of the day on a 59-yard catch. He finished as the team’s leading receiver with two catches for 64 yards.
This was the second preseason game in which Fitzpatrick led the team in receiving, and he also has two 30-plus yard receptions.

Broderick Jones
The offensive line looked better as a hole, but Jones who was the biggest culprit of the Steelers’ pass protection issues last week after he gave up three pressures, two of which went for sacks, bounced back big time in preseason Week 3 and had a spotless showing in pass protection.

Nick Herbig
Herbig has done nothing but make plays the past two weeks. After talling 1.5 sacks in preseason Week 2, Herbig added another two on Saturday. He already had a spot locked-in on the 53-man roster, but his showing was encouraging nonetheless.

Julius Welschof
Like Herbig, Welschof had a pair of sacks, tied for the most on the team, he finished the preseason with three sacks in total and has done just about all he can to earn himself a roster spot.

Conclusion
As I wrap up this discussion, it’s essential to remember that preseason is just that—preseason. The games serve a purpose beyond the scoreboard. They are a vital part of the journey toward the regular season, where the real stakes lie. Now, that preseason is over the Steelers will start to look ahead to Week 1, but first they must cut their roster down to 53 by Tuesday, Aug. 27. So, Steelers Nation, the regular season is just around the corner, and we’ll be ready to rally behind our team. Until then, relax, stay optimistic, and let’s go, Steelers!
